This 13 year NBA veteran was obtained by the Indiana Pacers in an off season trade with Dallas. Darrell Armstrong is the oldest team member at the age of 38. Coach Rick Carlisle did not expect so much energy and enthusiasm from him and is making it difficult for the coach to reduce his playing time that would be more appropriate to someone his age.
One could say that Darrell Armstrong has brought with him a steadying influence into a team that had to deal with a whole lot of off court distractions in the last couple of years.
Darrell Armstrong was not drafted out of Fayetteville State in 1991. He played in the minor leagues and Europe before signing up as a free agent with Orlando in 1995 season. Since he signed up late, he only played three games that year. However, the next season he played 13. His career took off in 1996 but his best seasons were in 2000 and 2001 where he averaged 16.2 points and 15.9 points respectively.
The Indiana Pacers are still to recover from the brawl in 2004 with the Detroit Piston fans followed by a recent nightclub shooting that involved Jackson. Armstrong's energy and enthusiasm is what coach Carlisle is hoping would become contagious and help the team overcome these events. Jackson has been charged with felony criminal recklessness and misdemeanor of battery and disorderly conduct after he fired a gun outside a strip club in October 2006. In the meantime, Jackson has averaged 14 points a game after three games.
